When Friendships and Social Life Feel Hard

Peer relationships are one of the most significant parts of a child or teen's life and they can also be one of the most painful when things go wrong. Feeling left out, excluded, bullied, or like you just don't quite fit in can deeply affect how a young person sees themselves and their place in the world.

Some children and teens struggle to make or keep friends. Others find themselves in unhealthy or complicated social situations. Some experience social anxiety that makes it hard to reach out or speak up. Others are navigating cyberbullying, friendship drama, or the pressure to belong.

Therapy at Little Waves creates a private space to unpack these experiences: to process difficult feelings, explore what is getting in the way of connection, and build skills and confidence for navigating social situations more effectively.

What We Work On
  • Processing experiences of exclusion, bullying, or rejection
  • Understanding social dynamics and reading social cues
  • Building assertiveness and healthy boundaries
  • Managing social anxiety and fear of judgment
  • Making and maintaining friendships
  • Navigating conflict with peers
  • Digital life and cyberbullying
  • Developing a stable sense of identity independent of peer approval

Feeling like you don't belong is painful at any age. Therapy is a space where children and teens can explore what's getting in the way of connection and build the skills and confidence to find it.

How We Help

Approaches Used

1

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Helps children and teens examine beliefs about themselves and others in social situations: reducing anxiety, challenging unhelpful assumptions, and building more confident social responses.

2

Person-Centered Therapy

A warm, non-judgmental space where children and teens can explore their social experiences, process feelings of exclusion or rejection, and build a stronger sense of who they are.

3

Strengths-Based Approach

Building on existing social strengths and capacities while developing new skills: starting from what the child or teen is already doing well.

4

Narrative Therapy

Helping young people examine the stories they carry about their social worth and friendships, and open up new, more empowering ways of understanding their social experiences.
